Weqontoy

Chinchero Community

The weqontoy is a parasitic plant affecting leafy plants. In Rosaspata, a community in the Cusco region, the design forms part of the joining of designs in which rivers or lakes are featured. This motif is found in illcllas (shawls). The weqontoy is an almost geometrical configuration, and allows for the weaving of harmonious combinations. It is almost always woven over a single color background, permitting a contrast. In Andean thought, the weqontoy may be associated with a parasitic person, one who lives off of someone else’s resources, without offering anything in return (Corredor Puno-Cusco 2005).
